A Practical Encyclopedia of Letterforms
About the Author. Thomas V. Skrivan was born in Poland. He studied at the Warsaw Polytechnic, where he received a masterÍs degree in mechanical engineering. In 1965 he immigrated to the United States. For a number of years, he worked as a mechanical engineer. In 1981, however, he decided to change his occupation to one that appealed to him as more creative and artistic Æ a professional photographer. With time, he became an expert in photo-composites and special effects photography. As a photographer, he published two handbooks: ñPin Registration and Maskingñ and ñThe Book of Charts.î He also designed a computer program for color work on photographic enlargers. In 1994, with the increased importance of computer graphics and desktop publishing, he joined the digital imaging department of a photo/digital lab in San Francisco, where he worked until 2001. He then moved to Valencia, in Southern California, where he continues to work as a graphic designer and owner of his company, GraphicPage. The former work as a special-effects photographer, and the current as a digital imaging artist, provided him with a constant exposure to the advertising and publishing industry. This experience brought him an idea of a handbook/encyclopedia of fonts that would eliminate the difficulty and labor of identifying a font in an existing text or finding the right typeface for a new project.
